Why Community Pharmacy?
Community pharmacists are on the frontlines of the opioid crisis as the medication expert and today’s most accessible healthcare provider. We believe that helping pharmacists to provide opioid education, conduct interventions and provide on the ground support to patients and their families struggling with prescription opioid abuse and addiction can help to reduce and eliminate America’s opioid epidemic.
However, they can’t do it alone. Collaboration is also a critical part of solving the opioid crisis. Community pharmacists must be empowered to work with fellow members of the healthcare team to ensure a cohesive, comprehensive care plan for each patient.
As one of the most trusted professions in America, pharmacists make a profound impact within their communities every day. Many pharmacists already offer patient education programs and counseling support for health conditions like diabetes, and thousands more across the country are eager to offer opioid education and counseling in their communities. Our mission is to provide the tools and resources pharmacists need to continue serving as an educator and health advocate. This way, they’re able to help shed light on the realities of the epidemic, the risks associated with prescription opioids, as well as to highlight alternative options and advocate for proper opioid safety and disposal.
